Child Safety Committee Statement
Committee Statement: Commitment to Implementing the Child Safe Standards
As a not-for-profit theatre company operating in Victoria, we acknowledge our legal and moral obligation to implement the Victorian Child Safe Standards in full.
These 11 Standards, mandated under the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005 (Vic), apply to organisations that engage with children under the age of 18—whether through programs, performances, workshops, volunteering, or general involvement in our activities. As an arts organisation that may involve children as performers, participants, or audience members, we are legally required to ensure their safety, empowerment, and inclusion.
The Child Safe Standards are designed to:
- Prevent child abuse and harm,
- Promote cultural safety and equity,
- Embed child safety in leadership, policy, and practice,
- Provide child-focused complaint handling processes, and
- Ensure ongoing education, risk management, and continuous improvement.
This Committee is committed to:
- Providing strong leadership and governance that models a child-safe culture,
- Ensuring all staff, volunteers, and contractors understand and adhere to child safety policies,
- Allocating necessary resources for the implementation, training and review of the Standards,
- Upholding our public responsibility to create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all children and families we engage with.
We understand that implementing the Child Safe Standards is not a one-off task, but an ongoing process of reflection, improvement, and accountability. This commitment is not only about compliance—it reflects our core values as a community-focused organisation dedicated to nurturing creativity, safety, and trust.
This statement will be reviewed annually, or as legislative or operational changes require.
